Chisel Shave Club Review

I recently was contacted by Lauren at the Chisel Shave Club and she asked if I’d be interested in receiving a box of some of the products they offer and in return I agreed to give an honest review of those products. I’ve used these items exclusively for the last week and think it’s now time to express my opinions on said items.

The package came in a very nice box, packed with what smelled like some cedar shavings. There was no way anything was going to get damaged as there was PLENTY of packing material. The box I received included a razor with protective case and a brush for lathering. These 2 items normally are only included with the 6 or 12 month subscription.
Products included were a bar of Dr Squatch Cedar Citrus shower soap, a cube of Red Leaf shaving Soap, a bottle of Brickell Face Wash, Brickell Aftershave Lotion, and a 5 pack each of Astra and Shark blades.

Razor

So let’s start with the razor. It’s a 3 piece razor with a nice heavy handle. The head of the razor is somewhat on the medium end of aggressiveness with a wider blade gap than the DE 89 or 34C. But nothing like a R41. The shave was nice and smooth using the Astra blades. I don’t like Shark blades, but used one just to compare the 2 in the razor and I got satisfactory results. The handle on the razor is very similar in shape to the Merkur 34C, but slightly longer, which I liked.

What I didn’t like was that the head is obviously a cheaper metal and the threads were not smooth at all. It was almost as if it was cross threaded, but I made sure it wasn’t. Another shave club’s razor that I tried out had the exact same issue. I gave it to a new wet shaver who actually snapped off the stem which rendered the razor useless. That being said, I had no complaints about the razor’s performance.

Shave Brush

The brush is a very nice synthetic knot with a quality well made wood handle. I really liked it. I’d compare it to the brush sold at The Body Shop, but better. It has nice soft tips and builds lather very well.

Shower Soap

The bath/shower soap lathers well, has a good woodsy scent and left my skin feeling clean and not dry at all.

Face Wash

Next is the face wash. I don’t normally use face wash, but gave this one a try and was very impressed. It gives your face a nice cool tingle and doesn’t leave a dry or greasy feel after rinsing.

Shave Soap

I was reluctant about using  the Red Leaf Shave Soap due to having a bad experience before with another bar. But i tried something different this time. It’s a glycerin soap, so this time I melted into a mug. While in the shower, I would fill the mug with hot water and let it soak. Using the synthetic brush, it loaded up well and made a respectable lather with an adequate amount of so slickness. The scent was a pleasant tea smell.

After Shave

Finally the Brickell After Shave. It’s a balm type lotion and like most balms I’ve used. It soothes the skin and leaves it feeling smooth, but it also has fresh clean scent and cool menthol-like tingle.
